However, if you rely on others all the time, it will be difficult for a teenager to master the basic math and science skills that are necessary in everyday life.

 In 2009, the Josephson Institute's Center for Youth Ethics conducted an extensive study on the relationship between student deceit and lying in adult life.


According to the results, Respondents who admitted to using third-party sources on exams at an early age were twice as likely to lie to a supervisor, give false information on resumes, and three times as likely to exaggerate positive information about themselves in an interview.


According to the founder of the Institute of Ethics, Professor Michael Josephson, the values ​​and habits formed in school years rarely change in adulthood. The ability to deceive directly depends on the character, which is finally formed in adolescence.


Thus, it is in high school or college, according to Josephson, that students learn one of life's most important lessons: By lying to teachers, they deceive themselves. In our country, such studies have not been conducted recently, but there is reason to think: how much will the results differ?


What is academic integrity and why is it important to promote it?

Academic integrity is the self-completion of homework, written tests, exams, essays, research, presentations, and other types of learning tasks.

Psychologist Thomas Leacon advises educators to explain that cheating backfires:

  • low self-esteem : it is impossible to be proud of the result, to which not enough effort has been made;
  • lying always works against the one who lied; injustice towards the teacher and his classmates;
  • loss of confidence on the part of the teacher and the whole class;
  • deception will be repeated in other life situations and may become a habit.

How to deal with cheating

If your child is caught cheating, don't scold him. It is important to analyze the reasons that led to this, and understand what to do with it: offer to repeat the material, retake it to close the gaps, connect to checking the homework yourself.

It is important that children have no fear of either the teacher or the parents. This approach works well for trust. To reduce the motivation to cheat, psychologists recommend rewarding children for academic achievement, but very carefully.

It is recommended to praise not the result, but the efforts: this way the child will have an incentive to work independently. In addition, teachers advise parents not to scold students for bad grades, but also not to encourage them too actively for good ones. By promising a new phone for an A in a quarter, you are replacing the learning goals: the child will try to get a mark, not knowledge.

In the fight against child cheating, an integrated approach is needed: lessons of honesty and work on trust. Children need to be carefully taught that doing homework, solving control and tests is necessary not for a good grade, but to consolidate knowledge.

A two or three is not a large-scale problem, because these marks can be corrected in a comfortable mode, and cheating will lead to a waste of time and unpleasant consequences. With this approach, students will begin to notice that using other people's knowledge is a useless exercise, and the learning process will become more meaningful.
