How to properly store and care for jewelry so that it does not darken

It's good that the trend for jewelry does not think to fade away! After all, thanks to him, any fashionista can afford to buy jewelry with virtually no restrictions. And if you know how to create jewelry with your own hands, an unimaginable scope for designing various bows opens up!

How to properly store and care for jewelry so that it does not darken

But, unfortunately, even high-quality jewelry usually cannot boast of durability and unpretentiousness. Its storage must be treated as responsibly as possible, otherwise it will quickly lose its original aesthetics.

How to properly store jewelry?

Let's start with the basics and tell you how to store jewelry so that it does not darken, deform or lose its colors.

Cheap Chinese-made jewelry, which can be bought literally for a penny, has its own charm. Its most attractive feature is its incredible cheapness. However, these are actually disposable jewelry: no matter how you store them, they will quickly darken or peel off.

So, the main thing: you need to store jewelry in a dry, warm place, away from sources of moisture, heat and sunlight. And now some specifics.

Long-term storage of jewelry

An ideal place to store jewelry at home will be a special locker. It can be equipped to your liking, but it is imperative to provide hooks and hangers for beads, chains and other long jewelry (they must be stored in a suspended straightened state), pins upholstered in soft material for rings and bracelets , as well as a mesh for earrings.

The locker should be tightly closed, protecting jewelry from moisture and direct sunlight. Ideally, if the inside of the door is mirrored: it is more convenient to pick up decorations for the bow right on the spot.

You can equip a place to store jewelry in a dressing table drawer or chest of drawers. However, keep in mind that decorations love privacy, that is, you need to divide the drawer space into personal cells for each decoration.

An excellent solution for those who do not want to bother too much, will be organizers for cutlery. Ideally, they should be soft (you can line the cells with felt, velvet, natural knitwear or other fabrics that do not accumulate static electricity).

Despite the fact that many ladies like to put on makeup and wear jewelry in the bathroom, it’s definitely not worth equipping a place to store jewelry there. Water, humid air and steam are the main enemies of jewelry.

If there are not too many decorations, you can place them in a special pencil case or box. The requirement for individual cells remains. However, you can put your favorite earrings , rings , beads and other jewelry in linen bags or zip bags: this way they will definitely not get confused and do not mix in the space of the box.

It is virtually impossible to completely eliminate the ingress of moist air into a container with jewelry. This problem is especially acute in autumn and winter, when the heating is already or is not working yet, and it is cold and humid outside. An excellent solution to this problem is silica gel bags. They can be removed from the box with new shoes and put in a jewelry box or cabinet.

An alternative option is to buy a bag of cat litter (silica gel, that is!), pack a small amount of litter in a couple of linen bags, and put it along with the decorations. Plastic bags cannot be used: silica gel granules simply will not work in them.

Silica gel granules can be replaced with rice, but not with sugar or salt. Sugar can “give” jewelry a nasty stickiness, and salt combined with moisture is generally the worst thing that can happen to jewelry!

What to do with jewelry for every day?

If you wear some jewelry every day or at least once a week, you definitely won’t want to bother with lockers, individual packages and other subtleties.

A wonderful option for such cases is a tree for jewelry. The tree can be floor or table - the main thing is that it has a sprawling "crown" on which it will be convenient to hang everyday jewelry and jewelry.

On the net you can find an abyss of master classes, where algorithms for making trees for jewelry are shown step by step. They are made from real tree branches, wire and even cardboard. A tree, made with love and care with your own hands, will become not only a convenient hanger for your favorite trinkets, but also a highlight of the interior.

There are also many alternative options. For example, boards for notes, picture frames with stretched mesh or plywood with hooks, ordinary trempels, and so on are adapted for storing everyday jewelry. And a collection of earrings can be placed on the grid of the "dream catcher".

How to care for jewelry?

No matter how carefully you store your favorite toys, you need to properly care for jewelry so that it does not darken or otherwise lose its original aesthetics.

You will not be able to keep jewelry from darkening if you ignore some rules:

  • Always remove jewelry at night, while exercising, exercising, and doing housework. This applies to absolutely all jewelry, including jewelry. We sweat, come into contact with household chemicals, forget about accuracy - all this is detrimental to delicate accessories. Yes, and it never hurts to restore proper blood circulation in the fingers and ears.
  • First, apply skin care products, cosmetics and perfume, and only then put on jewelry. Put on jewelry last, when you are already dressed, shining and fragrant. The ingress of creams and perfumes on jewelry is highly undesirable.
  • Do not allow jewelry to come into contact with water. Jewelry does not like prolonged contact with water, especially chlorinated and salty. Yes, many jewelry can be washed in soapy water, but you can’t leave them in it for a long time. And wood, leather, all kinds of ribbons, cords and turquoise do not tolerate liquids at all.

Caring for jewelry means taking care of it and wearing it in the right conditions. It is also not necessary to wash jewelry unless absolutely necessary: arrange “bath days” for jewelry only when they are really dirty.

Features of caring for jewelry made of different materials

As mentioned above, jewelry requires particularly delicate handling and care in accordance with the material from which it is made.

"Naked" yellow metals . For the manufacture of jewelry (and especially accessories for it), various metals are often used. If it is brass, bronze, tompac or other alloys containing copper, their stay in the water should be limited.

It is good to wipe such elements with vinegar or citric acid, then rinse and wipe dry. It is allowed to use soft abrasives (for example, GOI paste or soda gruel).

White and ferrous metals . Here we are talking mainly about jewelry steel, titanium and tungsten. These metals are characterized by pronounced hypoallergenic properties, resistance to external influences and spectacular appearance, therefore they are often used to make high-quality jewelry.

These metals can be washed by soaking in soapy water, polished with mild abrasives, treated with vinegar and other acidic household products. But white copper-based alloys (for example, nickel silver or cupronickel) need to be looked after in the same way as uncoated yellow metals.

For cleaning products with glass in all manifestations (rhinestones, beads, beads), you can use a soapy solution. To prepare the solution, you need to dissolve a little laundry or liquid soap in a liter of warm water.

Coated metals . Often, fittings and jewelry made from ordinary alloys are covered with the thinnest layer of precious metals (gold, silver, rhodium, and so on). As a result, jewelry acquires a presentable appearance and greater resistance to external influences.

Despite the fact that the coatings applied by galvanization are quite durable, abrasives should not be used to clean such jewelry, as this can damage the top layer. The best option is to wipe the jewelry with a solution of ammonia or vinegar, rinse, pat dry with a soft cloth and dry naturally.

High-quality jewelry can last for many years without losing its presentable appearance, if you properly care for it.
